San Francisco 49ers Give Head Coach Kyle Shanahan A New Six-Year Deal
Andrew Ramirez Just four months after taking the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl, fourth-year head coach Kyle Shanahan has now received a lucrative contract extension.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Shanahan received a new six-year deal that signs him through the 2025 season. Though there weren't any financial details immediately available, Schefter reported that Shanahan is now "one of the NFL's five highest-paid head coaches."
Shanahan was in the midst of a six-year deal that he signed in 2017 when the 49ers hired him as their new head coach. Schefter notes that the new contract replaces the previous six-year pact.
The 40-year-old received his first head coaching gig after serving as the offensive coordinator for the 2016 NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons. Shanahan helped Matt Ryan enjoy the best offensive season of his career, winning the MVP award while leading Atlanta to a Super Bowl LI appearance.
The Falcons blew a 28-3 lead and fell 34-28 in overtime to the New England Patriots, but Shanahan's tremendous work with Ryan and the Falcons didn't go unnoticed. It was more than enough to earn a head coaching, following the footsteps of his father Mike, who coached the Denver Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl championships in the 1997 and '98 seasons.

In Super Bowl LIV, Shanahan and the 49ers found themselves in a similar position to the Falcons three years earlier. They held a 10-point fourth quarter lead against the Kansas City Chiefs, but breakdowns on both sides of the ball allowed Patrick Mahomes to rally his team to victory.
Shanahan received criticism for once again being on the end of a fourth quarter meltdown in the Super Bowl, but that's all for another day. He as asserted himself as one of the NFL's best head coaches, and it was only a matter of time until he got a new deal.
The 49ers are slated to open up Week 1 of the 2020 season at home against the Arizona Cardinals.
