The Dave Matthews Band might be a classic tale today, but it is still one of the most remarkable aspects of Matthews' life. Today, he is not only a singer, but a record label owner, songwriter, producer, actor, and businessperson. Matthews has amassed a massive fortune of about $300 million through all of his different endeavors, which is undoubtedly impressive.

Matthews' Early Life

Dave Matthews was born David John Matthews on January 9th, 1967, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to John and Val Matthews and grew up with three siblings. Due to his father's employment as a physicist at IBM, Dave had to move from South Africa to New York City. At this point, Dave was about two years of age. Later in 1974, they moved again to Cambridge, England, and then moved back to New York in less than a year.

The family moved back and forth from New York to South Africa, but finally, Dave got settled in Johannesburg after his father's tragic death due to cancer. He completed his graduation from Damelin College. In fear of being drafted into the South African Military, Dave decided to move back to New York, where he began working at IBM. After which, he moved to Virginia to stay with his mother.

Despite the fast-moving and vagabond existence that Dave experienced since his childhood, he realized his calling for music at an early age. He began practicing the guitar when he was nine years old. Moving to Charlottesville in Virginia turned out to be a good thing for Matthews as he got the chance to do his first public performance. He also met the famous Tim Reynolds, and the two began performing together. It was also Reynolds' idea to have Matthews record some of his songs.

Music Career With DMB

When Matthews was still working as a bartender at Miller's in Charlottesville, he got the notion of forming a music band. The result was the historical formation of the 'Dave Matthews Band' in 1991. This legendary band had saxophonist LeRoi Moore, drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, violinist Boyd Tinsley, and keyboardist Peter Griesar as members. However, Griesar left the band two years later.

The band performed its first gig at the Trax Nightclub in Charlottesville in March 1991. In 1994, DMB released their first EP called Recently. That Song That Jane Likes and I'll Back You Up were among the most liked songs by the band. DMB also did shows in The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, and from Trax in Charlottesville, and these became the live track albums of the band.

Their first studio album came out in the year 1994, and it was titled Under The Tableand Dreaming. The songs that became a superhit from this album were What Would You Say, Satellite, and Ants Marching. This album made them famous all over the world and even got certified platinum six times. Their debut studio album and the second studio album, Crash, brought the band immense fame. It had some super hit songs like Crash Into Me, Too Much, and Tripping Billies, which earned DMB a Grammy and four other nominations.

In 1998, the band released their third studio album titled Before These Crowded Streets, and it became an instant hit, selling over 900,000 albums within the first week of its release. The fourth album, Everyday, released in 2001, was no different. The band kept dropping new hit albums like Busted Stuff, Big WhiskeyAnd The GrooGrux King, Away From The World, and Come Tomorrow.

They made a breakthrough in 2018 with the release of Come Tomorrow as it debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Through this, DMB also set the record of being the only band that debuted to the #1 spot consecutively. The solo album released by Dave Matthews in 2003 was of particular importance as it explored his conception of loss, death, and love, as stated by RollingStone. This album was called Some Devil, and it became critically acclimated. One of its singles, called Gravedigger, also won a Grammy.

His Career In Acting

Dave Matthews began with acting even before he began with music. Since the early 1990s, he was a part of theatre productions at Live Arts theater as well as Charlottesville's Offstage Theatre. After this phase of his life, he got busy making music and acted again in the 2000s. Biography acted in the Disney film Where the Red Fern Grows in 2003, which became his big-screen debut. Two years later, he acted again in Because Of Winn-Dixie alongside co-stars Jeff Daniels and Eva Marie Saint.

Following this, Matthews acted in a series of Adam Sandler movies such as I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007), You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008), and Just Go with It (2011). He also performed as a voice artist for the animated show called Pete The Cat.

Dave's Other Endeavors

Matthews has also made fancy bucks out of his other ventures in life other than acting and singing. He purchased the Blenheim Farm in 1999 and started growing plant grapes there. Matthews originally had plans to buy and keep the land as an asset of historical significance. However, he changed his mind later. The 10 acres of vast land in Albemarle County, Virginia, came to be known as Blenheim Vineyards. He started this business in 2000, and now it has become his primary income source, and it produces 5,500 cases of wine annually.

Blenheim Vineyards also collaborated with winemakers Sean McKenzie and Steve Reeder to establish 'Dreaming Tree Wines' in 2011. Matthews has also tried his hand at producing. The documentary Last Call At The Oasis, directed by Jessica Yu, was one of his productions.

There was a time when Dave was a struggling artist, but today, he is one of the biggest private property owners in Virginia. He, however, lives a humble life with his family in his Seattle house, which he purchased for $360,000 in 2001.
